WILLIAMS<\/a>Although ultraviolet (UV) light successfully kills some microbes without introducing harmful chemicals to drinking water, it may not completely disinfect. Instead of killing all bacteria, the water-purification treatment may simply drive some into dormancy, leaving a chance that harmful microbes are revived later on, according to a study published this month (January 13) in <\/i><em><a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/es505211e\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Environmental Science &amp; Technology<\/i><\/a><\/em><i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>UV treatment damages bacterial DNA, blocking replication, but it doesn\u2019t disrupt the cell membrane, as other purification techniques such as chlorination do. In the U.S. and Canada, water treatment facilities first disinfect with chlorination and then use UV light as a secondary measure, but many small-scale facilities elsewhere in the world use only the UV treatment.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>To explore the risk of treating water only with UV, environmental engineer Xin Yu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences\u2019s Institute of Urban Environment and his colleagues exposed <\/i><em><i>Escherichia coli<\/i><\/em><i> and <\/i><em><i>Pseudomonas aeruginosa <\/i><\/em><i>to varying doses of UV light, then counted the colonies that formed in culture and measured the expression of a bacterial gene for a ribosomal subunit. While the treatments reduced colony growth by as much as 0.0001 percent, the team found no changes in the expression of the ribosomal gene, suggesting that the bacteria were still able to synthesize proteins.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Most strikingly, when UV-treated bacteria were diluted to less than 0.1 colony-forming unit (CFU)\/milliliter (mL)\u2014well below the common safety threshold of 100 CFU\/mL\u2014the bacteria were able to generate new growth within 24 hours in a nutrient-rich medium at 37 \u00b0C, the temperature of the human body. <\/i><em><i>E. coli <\/i><\/em><i>showed regrowth regardless of the level of UV treatment, while <\/i><em><i>P. aeruginosa <\/i><\/em><i>were only able to restart after exposure to low levels of UV.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<i>The occurrence of a viable but nonculturable state in bacteria may dramatically underestimate the health risks associated with drinking water,\u201d Yu and his colleagues wrote in their paper. \u201cThese results systematically revealed the potential health risks of UV disinfection and strongly suggest a combined disinfection strategy.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-scientist.com\/?articles.view\/articleNo\/42009\/title\/UV-Light-Doesn-t-Fully-Purify\/\">Read original story here<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UV Light Doesn\u2019t Fully Purify Using ultraviolet light to disinfect drinking water may simply drive bacteria to dormancy, rather than kill them.
