{"id":1340,"date":"2016-05-27T15:05:49","date_gmt":"2016-05-27T15:05:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oxidationtech.com\/blog\/?p=1340"},"modified":"2016-05-25T15:10:24","modified_gmt":"2016-05-25T15:10:24","slug":"researching-ozone-for-use-in-new-zealand-dairy-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oxidationtech.com\/blog\/researching-ozone-for-use-in-new-zealand-dairy-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Researching ozone for use in New Zealand dairy industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Grant could save dairy industry millions<\/h1>\n<section class=\"standfirst\">Garth Lovatt has received a grant to research the use of ozone on New Zealand dairy farms<\/section>\n<p class=\"bylines\"><time title=\"April 8, 2016\" datetime=\"2016-04-08T12:29:14-05:00\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/cms.tewahanui.nz\/media\/thumbs\/images\/2016\/04\/07\/IMG_7945-crop-c0-5__0-5-1020x540.JPG\" alt=\"Ozone use on dairy farms\" width=\"1020\" height=\"540\" \/><\/time><\/p>\n<p>An Auckland man has received a grant that he believes could save the New Zealand dairy industry millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Former engineer Garth Lovatt will travel to Europe, North America, and Asia in April to research the idea of using ozone in a sustainable and profitable dairy model.<\/p>\n<p>Ozone is made up of air and electricity, and could provide a range of benefits to dairy farmers, without negative impact.<\/p>\n<p>The trip will allow Mr Lovatt to research ozone-related technologies for different uses, including as an oxidiser and antimicrobial on dairy farms which would replace antibiotics and pharmaceuticals for the treatment of cattle.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lovatt said his research could help boost the New Zealand dairy industry by $1 to 1.5 billion dollars annually, with ozone having many benefits in dairy farming.<\/p>\n<p>One of these benefits, he said, was that ozone would prevent losses of dairy cows on farms due to infection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can correct that [the losses], which I think we can do by using ozone, I have got to go and talk to the manufacturers and researchers that are leading the charge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lovatt will meet individuals and organisations that are already using ozone as an oxidiser and antimicrobial to gain further knowledge on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>The Agricultural and Marketing Research and Development Trust (AGMARDT) awarded the grant to Mr Lovatt, with AGMARDT general manager, Malcolm Nitschke, saying the project was original and revolutionary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAGMARDT seek innovative ideas, and we felt this project was considered very innovative, it hadn\u2019t been done before. If it comes off, it could be truly transformational for the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ozone, like antibiotics, kills bacteria but does not cause mutations or generate resistant types within the cows &#8211; unlike antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this and other factors, Mr Lovatt said the use of ozone on dairy farms would allow for sustainability as well as profitability.<\/p>\n<p>The grant given to Mr Lovatt is gaining support for his research from DairyNZ, a company producing research and development for sustainable dairy farming in New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>DairyNZ\u2019s industry education facilitator, Susan Stokes, said AGMARDT funding added value to the dairy industry by building leadership capability and sponsoring and enabling innovative research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis then attracts and retains talented people that will develop creative solutions for the New Zealand dairy industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about the use of ozone on the dairy farm at our website below:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.oxidationtech.com\/applications\/dairy.html<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
