as a luxury item.\u00a0 Recently, this fad has even extended beyond the USA!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here are a few articles we have found lately:<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">&#8216;Raw&#8217; water craze could leave you on the toilet<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>http:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/news\/article.cfm?c_id=1&#038;objectid=11981874<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Experts are cautioning Kiwis against diving into the world&#8217;s latest natural health craze &#8211; untreated, unfiltered &#8220;raw&#8221; water.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>In some parts of the US, there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/12\/29\/dining\/raw-water-unfiltered.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">been a drive<\/a> in alternative health circles to &#8220;get off the water grid&#8221; and drink spring water that hadn&#8217;t been filtered, treated, or even sterilised.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>One San Francisco grocery store was selling 9 litre orbs of the water &#8211; claimed to have &#8220;a vaguely mild sweetness, a nice smooth mouth feel, nothing that overwhelms the flavour profile&#8221; &#8211; for NZ$50 each.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>There didn&#8217;t yet appear to be any companies following suit here, but scientists have warned Kiwis not to try sourcing their own &#8211; and stick to their town supply.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i><span style=\"color: #ce181e;\"><b>&#8220;Consuming untreated water is like driving your car without wearing a safety belt &#8211; you might get away with it, but you are taking an unnecessary risk,&#8221; <\/b><\/span>said Michael Baker, a professor of public health at Otago University in Wellington.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>New Zealand surface water was heavily contaminated with microbes that could cause sickness &#8211; among them protozoa such as giardia and cryptosporidia, or bacteria like salmonella and campylobacter, which struck down more than 5000 Havelock North residents in 2016.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>There were also increasing cases of serious, and occasionally fatal, shiga-toxin producing E. coli infections, Bakers said.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>&#8220;From a health and sustainability perspective, the science supports use of treated, fluoridated, reticulated water supplies as the main source of drinking water in most situations.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>&#8220;There are of course exceptional circumstances where people need to use alternatives, such as boiled water if local water treatment is inadequate \u2013 which may for example occur when water treatment systems are overwhelmed by heavy rainfall events.&#8221;<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ce181e;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i><b>Baker dismissed claims by producers of raw water being superior to properly treated water as &#8220;idiotic&#8221;.<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Raw Water: Here Is What You Need To Know Before You Buy It<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/brucelee\/2018\/01\/07\/raw-water-here-is-what-you-need-to-know-before-you-buy-it\/#5f40ae87278c\">https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/brucelee\/2018\/01\/07\/raw-water-here-is-what-you-need-to-know-before-you-buy-it\/#5f40ae87278c<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i><b>What has been done to test the raw water for dangerous microbes such as bacteria and parasites?<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Water is not treated and cleaned for fun. <span style=\"color: #ce181e;\"><b>Untreated water can include microorganisms<\/b><\/span> such as:<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Giardia lamblia:<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>\u00a0This parasite can cause a\u00a0diarrhea-causing disease called Giardiasis, otherwise known as \u201cbeaver fever.\u201d Note: it is not Bieber fever, which is a completely different thing.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Cryptosporidium<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>: This wonderful microrganism burrows into\u00a0your intestines and can cause watery diarrhea for a couple weeks or kill you if your immune system is weak.<br \/>\nCholera<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Vibrio cholerae<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>: This charming bacteria can cause cholera, which can kill you.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Salmonella typhi<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>: This bacteria can lead to typhoid fever. And some infected people can continue to carry this bacteria for the rest of their lives.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>The seller should be able to document how the water was collected and tested. Startups dedicated to untreated water are popping up. People \u2014 including\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/juicero-is-shutting-down-operations-2017-9\"><span style=\"color: #196d8d;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>startup Juicero&#8217;s cofounder Doug Evans<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>\u00a0\u2014 are gathering gallons of untreated water from natural springs to bring to Burning Man.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Tourmaline Spring sells an untreated water as &#8220;sacred, living water.&#8221;<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Tourmaline Spring<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>While Evans and other fans say raw water is perfect for those who are &#8220;extreme about health,&#8221; Marler \u2014 a food-safety advocate and a lawyer \u2014 says the opposite is true.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i><span style=\"color: #ce181e;\"><b>&#8220;Almost everything conceivable that can make you sick can be found in water,&#8221;<\/b><\/span> Marler told Business Insider.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Unfiltered, untreated water, even from the cleanest streams, can contain animal feces, spreading Giardia, which has symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea and results in roughly 4,600 hospitalizations a year. Hepatitis A, which resulted in\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-hepatitis-outbreak-20171017-story.html\"><span style=\"color: #196d8d;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>20 deaths in a California outbreak<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>\u00a0in 2017, can be spread through water if it isn&#8217;t treated. E. coli, and cholera can also be transmitted via untreated water.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Because filtered, treated water has become the norm, Marler says, most people don&#8217;t realize how dangerous s0-called raw water can be.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i><span style=\"color: #ce181e;\"><b>&#8220;The diseases that killed our great-grandparents were completely forgotten about,&#8221; <\/b><\/span>he said.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Most Americans don&#8217;t personally know anyone who died of Hepatitis A or cholera, thanks to advances in technology and more stringent safety standards. If you don\u2019t have your report (you mean you don\u2019t always read every word that comes with your water bill?), contact your local water provider. And if you want a cheap insurance policy, use a water filter \u2014 it\u2019ll remove some, although not all, contaminants.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #111111;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i>Amid all the uncertainty, there is one thing we know for sure: <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #ed1c24;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><i><b>Bottling and transporting water uses energy and burns fossil fuels. For most of us, most of the time, it isn\u2019t. I happily drink the water coming out of my tap. I also happily drink the raw water gurgling up a few miles down the road. <span style=\"color: #ed1c24;\"><b>Mostly, I\u2019m grateful to live a life where the quality of my water doesn\u2019t have to be one of my concerns.<\/b><\/span><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0066ff;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Liberation Serif', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">If you are still not convinced and want the \u201craw water\u201d but maybe without so many viruses and bacteria, consider drilling a well and treating your water with ozone. Ozone will not alter the water in any way, will not remove minerals, but will kill all bacteria and viruses from your \u201craw water\u201d and make it safe to drink.
