We commonly receive questions on this process and took this time-lapse video to help answer the most common questions we receive.

In this process, we are using a VMUS-4 ozone generator to produce ozone from oxygen. Oxygen flow is set to 1 LPM with a nominal purity of 90-93%. At this flow rate the VMUS-4 ozone generator will produce ozone at a concentration of 5.5% by weight resulting in 4.7 g/hr of ozone production.

An SS1 sintered stainless steel diffuser is used to bubble ozone gas into 1 liter of virgin olive oil in a 2 liter graduated cylinder. The graduated cylinder provides a great column with some height for bubbling ozone gas through liquids.

A UV-106L ozone analyzer is used to measure the ozone off-gas in the head-space of the graduated cylinder.

This process required ~25 hours to complete the ozonated olive oil to a great quality. This calculated to an applied ozone dosage of 117.5 grams of ozone into 1 liter of olive oil. Very little ozone off-gassed for much of the process with higher levels of ozone off-gassing toward the end. Taking this into account, we estimate that roughly 100 grams of ozone was consumed by the olive oil.

Learn more about ozonated olive oil on our website HERE.

Specific products used:

VMUS-4 Ozone Generator

UV-106L Ozone Analyzer

SS1 Diffuser

Ozone Tubing

Buy Ozonated Olive Oil

Even though this seems easy enough, each step is critical. Do I need to cool the process?

Answer – This process does create heat. An ozone concentration of 5.5% by weight did not generate sufficient heat to cause any concerns.

Question – Does ozone off-gas from the process? Is this safe?

Answer– Ozone does off-gas from the process. However, provided the ozone concentration is high enough to achieve good ozone solubility the amount of off-gassing ozone was very minimal. A window in the room was cracked open slightly, this was sufficient to maintain ozone levels in room, 3+ feet from the process to below 0.1 ppm throughout the process.

Question – How do I know the process is complete?

Answer – The olive oil will turn to a white color, the temperature of the process will drop to room temperature as the rate of ozone reactions decreases. As the temperature decreases the liquid will solidify to a gel like consistency at room temperature (70-deg F)

This video demonstrates the creation of ozonated olive oil.
