I found an interesting article on the use of ozone gas for disinfecting ambulances.  This is interesting to me as I am a volunteer EMT in my local community.  While I appreciate that ozone gas can provide antimicrobial intervention quicker and more efficiently than most any other technology, I question how this applies to the field of EMS.

Question #1 – While the ozone generator is running in the ambulance one would not want to enter the ambulance.  However, we have no idea when the next emergency occurs that will require our services.  Do we have time to air out the ambulance?  Will the ozone level in the back of the ambulance be safe?

Question #2 – There are many rubber and plastic medical devices in the back of the ambulance.  How will these be affected by the use of high levels of ozone?  Using a cracked ambu-bag that will not hold air, or cracked oxygen tubing could certainly ruin my day.

EMS can, at times, be a messy profession. Some messes are much harder to clean up than others.

Industrial technologies company Teledyne Technologies Inc. has agreed to buy In USA Inc., a Massachusetts-based maker of i ndustrial gas monitoring instruments, for an undisclosed sum.

Thousand Oaks-based Teledyne (NYSE: TDY) said its Teledyne Instruments Inc. unit will acquire the assets of In USA Inc., based in Norwood, Mass., a maker of a range of ozone generators, ozone analyzers and other gas monitoring instruments using ultraviolet and infrared-based technologies.

Teledyne said it expects the deal to close later this month, subject to customary conditions.

Founded in 1988, In USA’s gas sensors and monitors are designed for use across several industrial process applications in the semiconductor, water treatment, food and beverage and pharmaceutical industries.

Teledyne said it plans to relocate and consolidate manufacturing into the new, owned facility of Teledyne Advanced Pollution Instrumentation in San Diego.

Teledyne Chairman, President and CEO Robert Mehrabian said Teledyne Advanced Pollution Instrumentation is one of the company’s strongest performing units, and the acquisition of In USA will add complementary products, sales channels and applications expertise to its existing industrial ozone instrumentation.

Teledyne Technologies makes instrumentation, digital imaging products and software, aerospace and defense electronics, and engineered systems.
