Bottled Water
Ozone in water provides an excellent disinfectant that leaves only oxygen and pure water as by-products. Ozone gas is dissolved into water to disinfect water, ozone residuals in water can, and will, disinfect the bottle that is filled, along with the cap that is installed. Leaving safe, pure water with no chemical residuals.
Ozone in the Industry:
Ozone was given GRAS approval for bottled water by the FDA in 1982. Since that time, ozone has become the de-facto disinfectant for bottled water applications. Ozone has provided an efficient, safe method of disinfecting water to prevent pathogens that may be present in the final water, or introduced from bottled water equipment, bottles, or caps.
The process of implementing ozone into bottled water requires precise control, and quality equipment to ensure that the water, bottles, and caps are indeed disinfected. Proper analysis of ozone levels in the water and control of this ozone level is paramount to a successful, and easy to operate ozone system. As ozone is only one part of a bottled water line, it is important it is integrated into the system, automated, and easy to operate.
How Ozone is Implemented:
Ozone is generated from a gas, via corona discharge. This ozone gas is produced from oxygen in air, either from dry air, or concentrated oxygen.
Ozone gas can be dissolved into water via a venturi injector of bubble diffuser. The proper technology for your application should be reviewed based upon your specific process and requirements. Below are drawings of examples of each as an overview.
The drawing below shows ozone dissolved into water with a flow-through ozone injection system. Water flows from the storage tank, through the ozone water system, directly to the filler.
The drawing below shows ozone dissolved into water with a bubble diffuser and ozone generator using a large ozone tank. In this application, an ozone destruct system will be required for the tank, along with an ozone generation system.
Special Considerations:
*Too little ozone in the water may allow pathogens to grow in the bottle and potential sicken the consumer.
*Too much ozone can create disinfection byproducts (DBP's) such as bromate.
