A Cup of Joe with John: How NOT to Fix Ozone Leaks

Ozone does a great job solving problems when it gets to where it needs to be.  When ozone leaks from tubing or other places, it is not only a health hazard, but it begins to oxidize equipment and eventually destroys it.  It is very important to prevent ozone leaks, but not every method is suitable for particular types of leaks.  If the fittings for an ozone line begin to leak, or the tubing develops a crack, this needs to be fixed with stainless steel or FEP tubing and ozone compatible fittings.

Building a stainless steel shroud with an exhaust vent is not an appropriate method for dealing with ozone leaks like this.  A shroud and vent may be needed for some situations, but as you can see from these pictures, a high concentration ozone leak will lead to corrosion, formation of nitric acid, and an ugly mess.

An effective, safe, and simple method of finding an ozone leak is using a simple spray bottle with some water and detergent.  Turn off the ozone generator but leave on the oxygen supply.  This allows the whole system to operate normally, but without the ozone gas.  Oxygen continues to flow through the pipes and will leak where the ozone would leak.  The ozone odor likely will give you some idea of where the ozone leak is, and where to start spraying on some soapy water.  A leaky fitting will begin to show bubbles and foam as the gas escapes.  Tighten these until the leak stops, or replace the fitting with stainless or Kynar.  A crack in the tubing can be more tricky because the leak is large and simply blows the soapy water away.  But often a leak like this can be felt or even heard.

Oxidation Technologies has ozone compatible fittings and tubing that is suited for high concentrations of ozone over a long period of time.  Feel free to contact us with any questions.  We have years of experience building ozone systems, integrating them, and also helping to correct problems with an existing installation that is not working properly.   https://www.oxidationtech.com/services/system-integration.html
