A Cup of Joe with John: A Little Ozone Keeps your Humidifier Clean

I got a small humidifier for our home, but before long, it just wasn’t using any water or doing its job. This particular unit has a basket shaped wicking filter that sits in a pool of water. As it draws water up, a fan blows across the filter evaporating the water into the air. I followed the cleaning directions, but it would only last about 3 days before performance declined and it was covered with disgusting slime.

This looked like a perfect application for ozone, but how could I get the ozone where I needed it when it was needed?

First I tried making a bucket of ozonated water with my Ozo-Pod-10. https://www.oxidationtech.com/products/ozone-generators/electrolitic.html It quickly brought the water to a good ozone concentration and I soaked the wicking filter while letting the Ozo-Pod run.

Next I scrubbed out the base with ozonated water.

For a good measure, I let the Ozo-Pod run in the RO water used to fill up the reserve tank.

I was happy to see the humidifier blow past day three, sucking down the tanks of ozonated RO water like a thirsty camel. But eventually the bacteria recovered and found habitat to thrive. This process doubled my time between a thorough cleaning, but the bacteria still won.

The problem was that the ozone does not stay in the water very long, and reverts to oxygen before it can soak up into the wick. I needed a regular shot of ozone in the water to replenish it. What I really wanted to do was keep the Ozo-Pod in the shallow water basin, but it was just a little bit to big.

The solution was to remove the stainless steel shell from around the ozone-generating element. The element is fed by low voltage (12 V DC) so there is no shock hazard. The bare element fit perfectly submerged under a portion of the wick. When the water tank was placed in its holder, some of the tiny ozone bubbles found their way into the tank as well. The water under the wick became highly ozonated and the fan blew the faint smell of ozone like laundry on a clothes line.

The Ozo-Pod is a very versatile tool and provides a simple and effective way to apply ozonated water for small applications. Feel free to share any other ideas and uses you have found for the Ozo-Pod-10 https://www.oxidationtech.com/products/ozone-generators/electrolitic.html [email protected]
