What is Hypochlorite:

Hypochlorite is an ion composed of chlorine and oxygen. It is present in aqueous solutions and used for bleaching, disinfecting, and water treatment purposes. It is commonly used in laboratory reactions for chlorination and oxidation. Hypochlorite is the strongest oxidizing agent of the chlorine oxyanions.

Hypochlorite Exposure and Health Risks:

Hypochlorite is toxic by ingestion and inhalation. Inhalation can cause severe irritation and burning of the respiratory tract. It can cause coughing, choking, and shortness of breath. Chronic exposure can cause respiratory damage especially to the lungs, leading to frequent bronchial infections. Prolonged exposure can cause skin burns and ulcers. It is a powerful irritant to eyes, skin, and mucous membranes. Eye irritation causes redness, watering, and itching. Skin reactions include itching, scaling, reddening, and blistering.

Regulations:

There are no listed regulations or restrictions for the concentration of hypochlorite in water.

Measuring Hypochlorite:

Dissolved hypochlorite concentration in water can be measured as a percent as it is in the form of NaOCl. We carry kits from CHEMetrics that determine hypochlorite levels in water, ranging from 0-1.55% and 0-12.5%. All of our hypochlorite products can be viewed HERE.
