How to use Ozonated Water for Home Butchering

A small electrolytic Ozo-Pod is an excellent way to start using the same ozonated water that the meat processing plants are using to reduce bacterial contamination of meat.  Using ozonated water provides excellent disinfection without the odor and chemical residue of bleach water.

The Ozo-Pod 10 12 volt adapter simply needs to be plugged into an outlet and the electrolytic element placed in a bucket or large bowl of water.  You will immediately see very fine bubbles of ozone diffusing through the water as the ozone dissolves in the water.  Within minutes, the water will reach levels of dissolved ozone effective for sanitizing surfaces and equipment.  The water can be liberally applied to the meat for washing and disinfecting.

The electrolytic ozone cell can also be used with a hand held sprayer from the hardware store.  In these pictures I have simply cut the spray hose and run the water through a cell containing the electrolytic element.  The sprayer is filled only with tap water.  The spray nozzle is removed so that ozone is not off-gassed as it is sprayed.  As the pressurized water from the sprayer moves through the ozone cell, the water is ozonated and easily applied to the meat and surfaces I want to sanitize.

The Ozo-Pod is available on our website and is a very cost effective way to produce generous quantities of ozonated water.  The system using a hand sprayer or even a back pack sprayer is under development and available upon request.

Electrolytic ozone works best for use with batches of ozonated water in contrast to applications where a continuous supply of ozonated water is needed.  The electrolytic cells tend to cause the calcium in water to deposit on the elements over time and needs to be removed periodically with diluted vinegar.  This makes it impractical for high volume water ozonation, but perfect for smaller batches.

If you are looking for larger scale applications of ozonated water for sanitation, please check out our applications page and ozone water systems.
