Ozone is commonly used for disinfection purposes.  Ozone is a more powerful oxidant that chlorine, and other commonly used disinfectants.  This, along with the fact that ozone will break down into oxygen lends to the advantage of ozone as green alternative for disinfection.

While most common uses of ozone include drinking water, and food applications, other applications such as medical was processing are appearing.  While still a new application for ozone it holds promise as is outlined in the article below.

Medical waste can have high levels of bacteria, and may have pathogens that carry diseases on items that are thrown away.  These devices must be handled in special methods prior to being delivered to the landfill to ensure no cross-contamination occurs.  One option is to inject ozone into the waste, and grind this waste all on-site.  This is a cost savings for years to come.
