New Product: The FIOX Water System

The FIOX iron removal filter oxidizes any dissolved iron in the water with oxygen and ozone. The oxygen is pulled in from ambient air and the ozone is generated on site with a small ozone generator. The oxidized iron is filtered out with the back washable sand filter. The I-OX filters utilize an air injection system to remove iron (ferrous or clear water), manganese, and sulfur from the water via both oxidation and filtration. Unlike other iron filter alternatives, I-OX technology is designed for use in a single tank and valve system configuration, reducing both acquisition and maintenance costs yet delivering years of trouble-free service. No chemical additives or air compressors are required for operation or regeneration with the I-OX filters advanced design.

How does the I-OX filter work? During system regeneration, an air pocket is created when air is drawn in through an injector located in the brine port. During service, untreated water passes through the air pocket oxidizing any iron, sulfur, and manganese. The particles are filtered out. Then the system’s regeneration cycle backwashes the bed and replaces the air pocket, allowing the process to begin again.

Principles of Operation 

The ozone component provides protection from the common problem of iron bacteria bio-film which will plug up iron filtration systems unless the bacteria are controlled. Ozone is an energized O3 form of oxygen which not only accelerates oxidation of iron, but also destroys bacteria in the process.

Jacob’s Ladder Demonstration

Here we have a makeshift Jacob’s Ladder, created by one of our ozone experts. The Jacob’s Ladder does a good job of giving a visual explanation for how ozone is created on an extremely small scale. What you are seeing is essentially what is happening on the inside of an ozone generator to create ozone. The process is really quite simple, the arc that you can see is just heated ionized gas. The gas molecules like oxygen are broken down to where they are at an atomic level and then ionized. While the oxygen molecules are broken down, they can more easily collide and bind with different molecules. For the creation of ozone, the oxygen molecules bind with O2 to create O3.

Custom Solutions from Ozone Experts

We recently had a customer contact us in need of an ozone destruct unit. This particular customer runs a company where they sell ozonated water out of their store. The process to ozonate and disinfect the water was taking place in a backroom in the store. Because of the high foot traffic in the store with customers and employees constantly going into and leaving the store, it was important that ambient ozone levels remained low. The problem was that too much ozone was leaking out into the air, creating an environment that had the possibility to become unsafe. When one of our ozone specialists spoke with the customer on the phone, they had figured a CDA destruct unit would be the best option, considering it would be able to circulate the ambient air and destroy any ozone that may be present. However, our technician thought that a different route may be best. After some time going over the dilemma, our ozone specialist recommended a custom CDU-300 ozone destruct device. This decision was reached because it would be best to destroy the ozone in the tank where it was being used to ozonate the water, instead of waiting for the ozone to leak from the tanks before trying to destroy it. The final product is this CDU-300 (seen below) with a blower assembly to destroy ozone at the source, and not allow it to get into the ambient air. This just goes to show how speaking with an ozone expert can help you get the optimal product that will best fit your specific applications.

With all of the different oxygen concentrators that we have to offer, it can sometimes be difficult to discern between all of the options to figure out what is the best product for you. OXO10-OEM Assembly

The OXO10-OEM is capable of efficiently producing 21 SCFH (10 LPM) of oxygen from an OEM oxygen concentrator module @ 15 PSI and costs $1,450. One of the great things about this oxygen concentrator is that it only requires electrical power and compressed air for operation. Because of the compact design, the OXO10-OEM is made to fit into your existing system where high oxygen purity is needed. ATF-15

The ATF-15 is capable of producing 15 SCFH of oxygen at 18 PSI and costs $1,989. A patented single rotary distribution valve built into the ATF module continually rotates at a low speed from a small motor. The valve is maintenance-free, self-cleaning, insensitive to contamination, and invulnerable to wear. It directs the flow of compressed air to a group of four sieve beds (adsorption), while another four beds are purged into the atmosphere through the valve (desorption). The remaining four of the twelve beds are interconnected through the valve to equalize pressure as the sieve beds sequentially transition between adsorption and desorption.

Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Technology

Both of these oxygen concentrators incorporate PSA technology. PSA technology is essentially separating the oxygen (21%) from the air it is provided and returns the nitrogen (78%) to the atmosphere through a waste gas muffler. The main component to this technology is a material called Molecular Sieve (Zeolite). This sieve is an inert, ceramic-life material that is designed to absorb nitrogen more readily than oxygen. This process is reliable, virtually maintenance-free and will last indefinitely as long as it does not become contaminated with water or oil vapors.

The Key to Odor Removal – Ozone

The Process

Ozone is arguably the most efficient tactic we can use to get rid of foul odors. This is because ozone has the ability to eradicate odors at their source. Ozone can do this because it is able to adjust the chemical makeup of the molecules that are creating the bad smell. Ozone is considered to be unstable because it is made up of three oxygen atoms. Eliminating bad smells with ozone occurs when the third oxygen atom attaches to the molecules that are creating the odor. This detachment/attachment onto the foul molecules change the molecular structure of whatever is creating the bad smell, and essentially changes them to non-smelling molecules. This is the process that makes ozone a necessity when traditional remedies like baking soda or store-bought cleaning supplies simply won’t do the trick.  

Popular Applications

There are a number of different instances where ozone use would be preferred because the smell you are dealing with is simply too stubborn. One of the most common instances where ozone could be used is in regard to getting rid of cigarette odors. Cigarette smells can be especially pesky for a couple reasons, such as the smell being absorbed into fabrics (carpet, car seats), and also because cigarettes have been smoked in an area for years on end without the area ever being properly cleaned. For applications like getting the smoke smell out of cars, it is important to note that ozone on its own will not be the answer to completely getting rid of the smell. You should also have your car’s carpet deep cleaned, as well the air conditioning system cleaned out. If you fail to also follow these steps, the smoke smell will continue to come back.

Dealing with pet odors is another time when ozone may be the right solution. Ozonating specific parts of your house where your pet typically resides will get rid of the smell that your pet causes. Another popular application is getting rid of the smell caused by mold and mildew. An important thing to remember is that if you have mold, the use of ozone will not get rid of the already present mold. Using ozone in this instance will get rid of the smell that the mold is causing, and could also help in stopping the growth of mold. However, ozone will not kill the mold itself.

Safety Precautions

When it comes to using ozone for odor removal, the ozone levels present will be above the exposure limits for humans (and pets for that matter). Because of this, please remember to take some safety precautions before you begin the process of oxidizing an area.

                -Always remember to make sure that children and pets are out of the area and are unable to get into the area that you are oxidizing.

                -Wait approximately 2-4 hours after the ozone generator is done running before returning to the area where it was used.

                -In addition to human safety concerns, exposure to high enough ozone concentrations can also kill plants, cause damage to rubber, and discolor different materials, so make sure to take items out of the area you’re oxidizing to ensure they don’t get ruined.
