AMES, Iowa —A new vodka on the market claims to be the “world’s purest,” and it promises to give you less of a hangover.

IngeniOZ vodka was developed under a special patented process in Iowa by Hans Van Leeuwen, an Iowa State University civil, construction and environmental engineering professor.Bottles were put on Iowa store shelves since last June, and it is quickly gaining a following.

It’s a fully Iowa-made product as it’s made from Iowa corn. Bottles are purified and bottled at Iowa Distilling Company in Cumming.

Van Leeuwen said that while it won’t completely take away a hangover, the vodka’s purity makes it less severe. He said he adds ozone to the distillation process, which takes away all the impurities.

Van Leeuwen said impurities add to a hangover and some vodkas out there have dozens of them.

“We’ve taken a completely different approach that’s actually a great novelty and it’s the first time in 1,200 years, history of this of distillation that there is now something else that can be added onto the distillation to get to this high purity,” Van Leeuwen said.

“Most people, when they give us feedback, tell us that it appears to them to probably be the cleanest vodka that they’ve ever tried,” said Todd Dunkel, president of Iowa Distilling Company.

The name IngeniOZ stands for “ingenious” and “ozone,” and it can be found in many Iowa stores. A 750 milliliter bottle sells for about $24.
