O3 Units of Measure Defined

Common Units of Measure Defined:

Before we discuss ozone generator output, how to measure ozone dissolved in water, and many other important ozone information we must be clear on the units of measure used in the ozone world. There is definitely lingo, and assumptions of knowledge made in the “ozone world”, therefor, take some time, read below and make sure we are speaking the same language.

Ozone Generator Output Units:

g/hr = grams per hour

Is the most common measurement for overall ozone generator output. This measures the ozone weight in grams that is produced in one hour of time by the ozone generator. To make this determination the flow of gas through the ozone generator will be required, along with the quantity of that gas that is ozone. This will give the sufficient data necessary to provide a g/hr rating.

 

mg/hr = milligrams per hour

Commonly used to measure output of smaller ozone generators. 1 g/hr ozone = 1,000 mg/hr ozone.

 

kg/hr = killograms per hour

Used to measure output of very large ozone generators. 1 kg/hr ozone = 1,000 g/hr ozone.

 

lb/day= pounds per day

Used to measure output of large ozone generators in English units. 1 lb/day ozone = 18.89 g/hr ozone.

 

Ozone Concentration Units:

wt% = percent by Weight

Refers to the percentage of ozone gas in a given volume by weight (as opposed to volume). This provides a concentration of ozone gas in the flow of gas through the ozone generator.

 

g/m3 = grams per cubic meter

Best method to quantify concentration of ozone from ozone generator. This will provide the grams of ozone present in a given cubic meter of feed gas through an ozone generator.

 

ug/ml = micrograms per milliliter

Used to measure concentration of ozone in some application. This is the same as g/m3. 1 ug/ml ozone = 1 g/m3 ozone.

 

ppm = parts per million

Used to measure concentration of ozone in ambient air. Quantifies parts of ozone gas in every one millions parts of other gas (normally air). 1 part of ozone in 1 million parts of air will be 1 ppm. Note: ppm can be measured by weight or by volume. In the ozone, world ppm is almost always measured by volume.

Also used to measure concentration of ozone in water. 1 ppm = 1 mg/l ozone in water.

 

ppb = parts per billion

Measures low levels of ozone in ambient air. 1 ppb = 0.001 ppm.

 

mg/l = milligrams per liter

Normally used for measuring ozone in water. 1 mg/l = 1 ppm ozone in water.

Can also be used to measure ozone in air as a concentration. 1 mg/l ozone in air = 1 g/m3 = 1 ug/ml = 1 gamma. These call all be used interchangeably.

 

Flow Measurements for Feed-gas (Air or Oxygen):

LPM = liters per minute

Metric measurement of flow of feed-gas through the ozone generator. Sometimes indicated as L/min. This can be Oxygen, or Air flow. 1 LPM = 2.11 SCFH

 

SCFH = standard cubic feet per hour

English measurement of flow of feed-gas through the ozone generator. This can be Oxygen, or Air flow. 1 SCFH = 0.47 LPM

 

m3/hr = cubic meters per hour

Metric measurement of flow of feed-gas through the ozone generator, used primarily for large scale flow rates and ozone generators. This can be Oxygen, or Air flow. 1m3/hr = 16.66 LPM
