The FIOX Backwashable Air Over Media filter uses the oxygen in air to oxidize and filter iron, manganese, and sulfur.  It uses ozone to enhance the oxidation and prevent the common problem of bacteria buildup in the filter head space.  The Filter Ag-Plus media is a natural material that does not require periodic replacement or regeneration with chemical oxidants.

The FIOX filter uses Filter Ag Plus filter media - a natural sand with excellent filtration properties.  It does not contain any special chemical oxidants that need to be replaced or re-activated with chemicals.  Air is pulled into the headspace of the filter during the regeneration cycle.  Incoming water is showered through this compressed air space allowing the oxygen to oxidize contaminants.  A small amount of ozone is added to this air space to prevent growth of bacteria.  A small ozone generator adds ozone to the air that is being pulled into the headspace during the regeneration cycle.  The oxidized contaminants are filtered out with the back washable sand filter.  The headspace holds enough oxygen to oxidize 5 ppm of iron, 2.5 ppm manganese, and 3.5 ppm sulfur during an average 24 hour water use of 300 gallons for a 2-3 bathroom home.  If contaminant levels are lower, the backwash and regeneration cycle can be every 2 or three days.  If more oxygen and ozone is needed for higher contamination levels or pathogen problems, a WT ozone injection system will be needed with the filter.

The iron, manganese, sulfur and other metals found in water are often in a dissolved state that can’t be filtered without first being oxidized.  When oxidized, the dissolved metals form tiny particles that can be filtered.  Many iron or manganese filters on the market use a special filtration media that contains oxidizers that will oxidize the dissolved metals.  These chemical oxidants eventually get used up and need to be replaced or regenerated with chemicals.  Air Over Media filters in the market rely on an air space above the filter media.  Some of them also include special oxidizing media to provide further oxidation capacity.  These often work great for the first year, but then many of them begin to decline in performance because iron bacteria in the water colonize in the head space.  Iron bacteria produce a dense biofilm that prevents the filter from working properly.  Using some ozone in the headspace solves this problem and allows the filter to operated as it is designed.
