What is Oxygen:

Oxygen is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas. It is noncombustible but supports the burning of combustible materials. Materials that burn in air will burn more vigorously in oxygen. When heated under pressure, oxygen may rupture violently and explode. Oxygen makes up 21% of the earth's atmosphere and almost half of the earth's crust. Oxygen is used for cellular respiration and is a significant part of the major organic molecules as well as inorganic molecules that make up shells, teeth, and bone. Even though oxygen is used constantly for respiration, it is constantly replenished by photosynthesis in plants.

Oxygen Exposure and Health Risks:

Compressed oxygen gas has been classified as nonhazardous to health, non-flammable, and nonreactive, but an oxidizer. Liquid oxygen is a health hazard as it can cause hyperoxia, when cells are exposed to higher than normal partial pressure of oxygen, and frostbite. Elevated partial pressures of oxygen can be toxic, leading to convulsions. Oxygen toxicity begins to occur at partial pressures above 50 kPa. This only affects patients on mechanical ventilators. Inhaling over-concentrated oxygen can cause nausea, dizziness, irritation of lungs, pulmonary edema, and pneumonia. Oxygen can pose a threat as it promotes rapid combustion. Fire and explosion hazards exist with oxygen.

Regulations:

There are no regulations or exposure limits for Oxygen from the EPA, OSHA, or NIOSH.

Measuring Oxygen:

Oxygen concentration can be measured in the air or in water (dissolved) in units of parts per million (ppm). Many of our products have digital communication capabilities for easy monitoring and control. We carry portable, fixed, and dissolved Oxygen monitors and kits. All of our Oxygen products can be viewed HERE.
